His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2021 introduced the Green Ghana Day. Five million (5,000,000) trees were planted in 2021 and in
2022 the target was Twenty million (20,000,000) trees. The 2022 edition was launched on 1st March 2022 under theme mobilizing for a greener future.
The objectives under the Green Ghana Day are:
1.Creating enhanced national awareness on the necessity for collective action towards restoration of degraded landscape across the country,
2. Inculcating in the youth the value of planting and nurturing trees and their associated benefits 3. Protecting watersheds
4. Enhancing livelihoods of communities through the engagement in the production of tree seedlings, as well as, beautifying communities and the environment.
In Krachi East, the celebration of the day was duly recognized. The MCE for Krachi East Municipal Assembly, Hon. Francis Kofi Okesu was joined by the Municipal Forest Commissioner, Mr. Akwesi Agyei, The Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Issahaku Yakubu, Traditional rulers, Heads of Departments, Security Personnel, Assembly Members and the Media on Friday,10th of June, 2022 to mark the day.
The MCE reiterated the objectives of the day and encouraged everyone to continue to protect the forest especially during this time where climate change is on the rise.
He encouraged the people of Krachi East to take personal interest in planting trees and checking the indiscriminate and excessive felling of trees.
The MCE’s speech was followed by planting of trees by himself, The Municipal Coordinating Director, Municipal Forestry Commissioner and the other dignitaries.
